The Sun has riz...

5/31/2003

...the sun has set; Here we is, in Texas yet. I drove across Texas all day yesterday. I spent the night at another little truckstop, only this one was just a few miles East of El Paso.

I'm back in Phoenix for the night! I'll leave here tomorrow afternoon and make the last leg of the trip to Otay Mesa, hopefully getting through California after the scales close at Blythe.

California Bound!

5/30/2003

Dang, these rolls of paper are heavy. I am overweight for California, but legal everywhere else. I had to attempt to slide the rolls forward on the trailer, or wait 12 hours to get back onto the dock at Int'l Paper and get the load shifted. I opted to run as is.

I passed through the West Memphis OC yesterday, as well as the boyhood home of President Clinton (Hope, AR).

I spent the night in a little truck stop in New Boston, TX. That's strange...it doesn't look anything like the old Boston (in MA).

Headed for the Otay Mesa drop yard south of San Diego. Almost a 2,000 mile trip that will take me through Phoenix for the first time in 3 weeks!

Alabama

5/29/2003

Somewhere along the way to Alabama, I picked up something not nice to my stomach. It sucks when you are going to throw up and there is no place to stop along the road.

But I made it!

I dropped my trailer at Walmart this morning and am headed for an International Paper plant in Courtland, AL.

Somewhere in the northwestern area of the state...a long way from the closest interstate.

Water in Virginia

5/28/2003

I stopped to sleep at a truck stop on Western Virginia. When I woke up this morning and turned on the CB, I heard a Schneider driver offering bottled water off the back of his trailer.

Seems the consignee had refused 4 pallets of bottled water because the shrink wrap had broken. Customer Service advised him to dispose of it in a dumpster or otherwise get ride of it. He was giving it away to anyone who wanted/needed it

I helped him hand out the water. Picked up some for the road, too.

PA to Alabama

5/27/2003

I arrived in a little town called Lititz, PA. Beautiful place right on the edge of the Amish areas. I arrived the day before Memorial Day, and couldn't unload until this morning. I had to disconnect from the trailer since I would have been blocking the street.

I bobtailed to Harrisburg to the Operating Center there. I doubt I'll get paid for the layover because I "moved the truck" during my down time. But I did pick up quite a few hours to run with.

I picked up my load at the OC in Harrisburg and I'm headed for Cullman, Alabama to a WalMart Distribution Center.

MN to PA

5/23/2003

Hello from Wisconsin! It sure is flat out here. I'm running a load of fertilizer type stuff to a place just outside of Lancaster, PA.

Looks like I'll be spending Memorial Day in PA. 1,000 miles! Ewww, rain.

Eastbound & Down

5/20/2003

Oh My. My first real long run! I'm going from Fairfield, CA to St Paul, MN! 1,877 Paid Miles, Alright!

Hauling a load of empty aluminum cans (Brand new with no tops) is fun. Nothing to slow you down going over the mountains.

Vegas! Well, sorta

5/14/2003

Viva Las Vegas! My first trip through Vegas takes me on a Sears run from Delano, CA to St George, UT. My first trip over the Tehachapi was interesting, too.

I-5 Again?

5/5/2003

It seems that I'm stuck driving up and down the I-5 corridor in California, Oregon and Southern Washington. The scenery is starting to get old.

LIFE AS A WESTERN REGION DRIVER

ALRIGHT! I've passed my tests and I'm qualified to drive this beast. Now, let's get the heck on down the road. I'M A TRUE PUMPKINHEAD NOW.

I find that I do my best thinking while the wheels are rolling the miles away. Unfortunately most of that deep thinking doesn't stick around when I'm done driving. I find that more urgent things take my attention and the earth-saving ideas I had quietly slip into the haze of half-remembered feelings and emotions. I should get a voice recorder or something. I'll have to remember to do that.
